Pet loss gift ideas that bring comfort

By the Photoshoot Pets team · Updated November 1, 2026

Losing a pet is losing a member of the household, and the grief can be heavier than people around you expect. If you’re looking for pet loss gifts, you might be shopping for a friend, for a child who just lost their first pet, or honestly for yourself. All three are fine. These are the bereavement gift ideas we think help, starting with personal ones and ending with a few that are free.

What makes a pet loss gift feel right

It’s about that one animal. Generic sympathy items, a candle with a paw print, a mass-produced plaque, tend to end up in a drawer. A gift with the pet’s own face or name on it is different. It says you knew this was a particular dog, cat or rabbit with a particular habit of stealing socks, not just “a pet.”

It should also be easy to live with. Some people want reminders everywhere right away. Others need a few weeks. Something small and useful, that can sit in a cupboard until they’re ready, is kinder than a big display piece they feel they have to put out.

Personalized pet loss gifts

A photo mug with the pet’s name and years

Our mugs print one photo and one line of text. For a memorial, most people type the pet’s name with their years, like “Biscuit 2014–2026,” or just the name on its own. That’s the only text we print, so there’s no room for a verse or long message, and honestly the photo does most of the talking anyway.

If the photos you have are from years ago, or mostly blurry phone shots, try our optional Studio Enhance™. It retouches the photo into a clean studio-style portrait. The preview shows both, and you pick the one that looks most like them.

A 12x16 wall portrait

For something more permanent, we also print a 12x16 wall portrait from the same photo. It works well in a family room, so the pet is still part of the house.

If you’re sending it to someone else

Put their US address in as the shipping address at checkout and we’ll send it straight to them. Each order is made fresh, so allow 2–5 business days for printing plus about 2–5 business days in transit. There’s no printed gift message in the box, so follow it with a card or a quick message so they know who it’s from. Our pet memorial gifts guide has help with what to write.

Pet loss gifts for kids

A child’s first pet loss is a big one, and kids often grieve in bursts. Sad at bedtime, fine at breakfast. What helps is something they can hold and something they can do.

  • A mug with the pet’s photo for their hot chocolate, so the pet is still at the table.
  • A blank notebook for drawing pictures of the pet or writing letters to them.
  • A small plant they water themselves, in a pot they decorate with the pet’s name.

Let them help choose the photo. Kids usually pick a funny one, and that’s fine.

Gifts for yourself

Plenty of people searching for pet bereavement gifts are buying for themselves, and there’s nothing odd about that. Ordering a mug of your own dog or cat, or framing a photo you love, is a way of saying they mattered. Some people also put together a small box of the collar, a favorite toy and the vet’s paw-print card, if they were given one.

Comfort that isn’t a product

  • Plant something in their spot. A shrub by the back step where they waited, or bulbs that come up each spring.
  • Give to a shelter in their name. Food, blankets or money all help, and it turns the loss into care for another animal.
  • Talk to someone. Many veterinary schools run free pet-loss support lines, and your vet can usually point you to a local group.

If the Rainbow Bridge idea comforts you or the person you’re buying for, our Rainbow Bridge poem page explains where it came from and has a short original verse to share.
